Summer Hill is one of Sydney's great little food villages, and it starts a short walk from Marco Polo Motor Inn Sydney. Lackey Street and Smith Street are lined with Italian trattorias, Thai and Japanese kitchens, cafes and a classic pub, and three of the Inner West's best-loved food strips are a few minutes away: the Shanghai dumpling houses of Ashfield, the Italian bakeries of Haberfield and the Portuguese grills of Petersham. The hotel has no restaurant of its own, so this is our local guide to eating well nearby.

Lackey Street, the heart of Summer Hill village
Lackey Street runs beside Summer Hill station, about 600 metres from the hotel, an easy walk of under ten minutes. It is the centre of the village, with outdoor tables, a relaxed local crowd and a good spread of cuisines along a single block.
Opening hours vary through the week, so check before you head out, especially early in the week.
- Andiamo Trattoria, 29 to 31 Lackey Street: woodfired pizza and pasta, a village favourite since 1997
- Da Vinci's Italian Restaurant, 25 Lackey Street: classic Italian dining
- Thai Garn, 14 Lackey Street: Thai favourites to eat in or take away
- Lotus Dumpling Bar, 26 Lackey Street: dumplings and Asian share plates
- Fujiyama Japanese Restaurant, 48 Lackey Street: Japanese dishes and sushi
- Summer Hill Hotel, 1 Lackey Street: pub bistro, beer garden and sport on the big screens
- Plunge No. 46, opposite the station: coffee and a Mediterranean-style cafe menu

Smith Street cafes and a local wine bar
Smith Street is the village's other main street, a few minutes further on. It is the place for a slow weekend breakfast or a quiet glass of wine in the evening.
- Cafe Envy, 109 Smith Street: breakfast, brunch and lunch in a leafy courtyard under a jacaranda
- The Temperance Society, 122 Smith Street: a small wine bar with Australian wines and Inner West beers

Ashfield, Sydney's Little Shanghai
Liverpool Road in Ashfield, about 2 km from the hotel, is famous across Sydney for Shanghai-style cooking: soup dumplings, pan-fried buns, noodles and hot pots, often made by hand in front of you. It is a short drive, a quick bus ride or one stop west on the train from Summer Hill.
- New Shanghai, 273 Liverpool Road: handmade soup dumplings and Shanghai classics
- Shanghai Night and Taste of Shanghai on the same strip, perfect for a dumpling crawl

Haberfield's Italian strip and Petersham's Portuguese grills
Just north of the hotel across Parramatta Road, Ramsay Street in Haberfield is Sydney's original Little Italy, about 1 km away. Pasticceria Papa at 145 Ramsay Street is the famous stop for ricotta cheesecake, cannoli and pizza, and the street is full of delis and bakeries worth a wander.
About 1.5 km east, New Canterbury Road in Petersham is the heart of Sydney's Portuguese community. Queue at Sweet Belem for warm pasteis de nata, then try the charcoal chicken at Frango's or Silvas, or a seafood dinner at Costa do Sol.

Breakfast in your room and food delivered
There is no restaurant or breakfast service at the hotel, and every room is set up for easy meals of your own: a fridge, microwave, kettle, toaster and crockery, with tea, coffee and biscuits ready on arrival. Pick up breakfast supplies in the village and start the day at your own pace.
Food delivery reaches the hotel easily too, and reception is staffed 24 hours, so a late arrival can still enjoy a hot meal.
