Over a million people line Sydney Harbour on 31 December for two fireworks displays: the family fireworks at 9 pm and the famous midnight show launched from the Harbour Bridge, the Opera House and barges across the water. This guide covers where to watch, how to get there and back by train, and why a room at Marco Polo Motor Inn Sydney in Summer Hill, about 15 minutes by train from the city, is the smart place to stay for Sydney fireworks accommodation.

The two fireworks shows

The two fireworks shows

The 9 pm family fireworks are a shorter display aimed at children and anyone who prefers an earlier night. The midnight fireworks are the main event, around 12 minutes long, with the Harbour Bridge as the centrepiece. Both are best seen from anywhere with a clear line of sight to the bridge and the Opera House.

The City of Sydney publishes the official program, the vantage point list and any ticketing in the lead-up each year. Check it before you set out, as entry rules change from year to year.

Mrs Macquarie's Point and parts of the Royal Botanic Garden are usually ticketed for New Year's Eve, with tickets released through the official site months ahead. Harbour cruises, Taronga Zoo's event and restaurants along the foreshore also sell packages.

For a calmer night, plenty of locals watch from parks further along the harbour or from the Parramatta River foreshore, then take a later train home.

Getting home after midnight

Getting home after midnight

Transport for NSW runs extra train services through the night on New Year's Eve, and Summer Hill is on the direct line from Central and Town Hall, so there is no change of train and no taxi queue. Allow extra time at city stations straight after midnight, when crowds are at their peak.

Reception at the hotel is open 24 hours and rooms have keyless access, so there is no cut-off time for your return.
