New Year in Sydney runs for a week, not a night. It starts with the New Year's Eve fireworks and parties on 31 December, rolls into beach days and the January sales, then the New Year Test at the SCG and the start of the summer festival season. Here is what is on, how to get around by train, and why Marco Polo Motor Inn Sydney in Summer Hill is a comfortable base for the whole week.

New Year's Eve parties in Sydney
Sydney's biggest New Year's Eve parties cluster around the harbour and the city: ticketed events at the Opera House forecourt and the Royal Botanic Garden, rooftop and hotel bar parties in the CBD and The Rocks, club nights around Darling Harbour and Oxford Street, and family events at Darling Harbour and Parramatta.
Tickets for the best-known events go on sale from around October and sell out, so book the party before you book anything else. Most venues are a short walk from Circular Quay, Wynyard, Town Hall or Central stations, all on the direct line from Summer Hill.

New Year's Eve harbour cruises
A New Year's Eve cruise puts you on the water between the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House for both fireworks shows, with dinner and drinks included. Operators range from large catamarans and paddle steamers to small charter yachts, departing from Circular Quay, King Street Wharf and Darling Harbour.
A cruise is a premium way to see the fireworks, which makes a good-value room all the more welcome. From the hotel, take the train to Circular Quay or Wynyard for the wharves.

New Year's Day and the first week of January
New Year's Day is a public holiday, and Sydney heads to the beach. Bondi, Coogee and Manly are the classics; the Bondi to Coogee walk is a good way to clear the head. The January sales continue in the city, and Taronga Zoo, the Aquarium and the Harbour Bridge climb are all open.
- Friday 1 January 2027: New Year's Day public holiday
- New Year Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground, traditionally starting in the first days of January
- Sydney Festival, the city's summer arts festival, opens in early January
- Summer cricket, A-League football and January concerts across the city's stadiums
